The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) is the largest hunger relief organization in the Washington metro area serving over 530,000 people through direct food distribution programs and a network of 500 partner agencies.

Last year, the Capital Area Food Bank distributed 42 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 35 million meals – one-third of which was fresh fruits and vegetables.

A member of Feeding America, CAFB takes a comprehensive approach to addressing hunger by increasing access to nutritious food, initiating change through skill-building and advocacy, and creating sustainability with outreach and training for those at risk of hunger.

The mission of CAFB is to create access to good, healthy food for people in every community. Many of the food bank’s 500 partner agencies report they are seeing a tremendous increase in those seeking food assistance, from 30 to 100 percent. This increase is due to: job loss, the economy, high cost of housing, lack of health care and other issues. The CAFB’s motto is Together we can solve hunger.

The ConfexionConnexion creates artisanal baked confections by embracing bright bold flavors from unique ingredients like all natural freeze dried fruits and integrating them with modern techniques in small batches by hand. It operates out of Union Kitchen, a food incubator, in NE DC, which is a shared space where about 50 start-up food businesses operate.

The ConfexionConnexion supports the community by sourcing as many of our ingredients locally as possible. The organic cage free eggs come from Kreider Farms in Lancaster County, PA as well as our buttermilk and heavy cream. The flour it uses is GMO free and locally milled in Ellicot City, MD by Wilkins Roger Mills. It sources the fresh fruit that goes into the cake truffles from local farmer markets when in season.

Harrar Coffee & Roastery is a local, family-owned business offering a variety of high-quality coffees at a competitive price. The coffee shop was opened with a single vision: to deliver outstanding coffee to the community. It is determined to become a “must-have” and the go-to cafe for the neighborhood’s coffee lovers and local businesses.

Harrar Coffee & Roastery roasts its coffee in small batches daily. Fresh is the way to go for the best cup of coffee. It provides the freshest and flavorful coffee in town and takes the best beans from Ethiopia to develop its own way of roasting. It delivers smooth, rich, or authentic tastes–always flavorful and of the high quality our customers have come to expect. At the moment, it offers Harrar, Sidama, Yirgacheffe, Amaro Gayo, Limu from Ethiopia, Supremo, Excelso and Decaf from Colombia, Kenya and Peru.

Coffee is more than making sure that every small batch delivers big flavor. The art of coffee making can be found in Harrar Coffee & Roasterycoffee ceremonies, where coffee is roasted, ground, and served before the customers. To share a ceremony is a traditional sign of friendship–the perfect way to show how it feels about the customers.

Harrar Coffee & Roastery invests time, energy, and passion to get the blends right whether in its shop, customers’ home or their office.  It has built the reputation on high quality blends–roasted fresh every day for the shop, or after the customer ordered it for online customers–and Harrar Coffee & Roastery is proud of that.

The future plan of Harrar Coffee & Roastery is to grow coffee to contribute its part to the environment, and at the same time works with small-scale farmers and bring the unknown numerous different coffee types from Ethiopia and other African countries and introduce it to the customers for an affordable price. Harrar Coffee & Roastery wants to create a business connection between African small-scale farmers and USA coffee lovers.
