The world-wide EmeraldPlanet International Foundation movement is linking millions of professionals and citizens around the globe through a practical community-by-community identification, evaluation, broadcasting, and promotions weekly television program and selected The Emerald Mini-Treks.

EmeraldPlanet International Foundation has continually expanded its outreach and service to all sectors of countries and local communities. It is actively identifying the “best of the best” technologies, services, products, and processes. This is the “high touch” portions of the EmeraldPlanet global movement featuring the “high technologies” through The Emerald Mini-Treks, while creating The Emerald Mall to match those inventing, creating, experimenting with, and manufacturing needed technologies. with those individuals and communities needing such technologies, services, products, and processes for sustainable, resilient, and adaptive living in closer harmony with natural surroundings..

WELCOME to join in this world-wide movement by watching The EmeraldPlanet TV programs, participating in planning for and joining in various The Emerald Mini-Treks, and linking your “best practices” to those in need on The Emerald Mall. MANY BEST WISHES as together we create The EmeraldPlanet…Dr. Sam Hancock

Program Overview:

John Spears, LEED AP, CBA, ASSOC. AIA, is President of the Sustainable Design Group and Founder of the non profit “International Center for Sustainable Development” headquartered in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA.  He has been a leader and visionary in sustainable design and green building since the early 1970’s.  John has made an outstanding and lifelong impact on environmental awareness through his advocacy, spotlight on sustainable development, and conversation in the United States and abroad.  John has contributed to researching and identifying many of the green guidelines used in today’s high performance buildings and the technologies and renewable energy systems used today.

John’s work spans the globe.  One of his great accomplishments is helping design the first sustainable solar community development project in South Africa.  This project was selected to be presented at the United Nations “Global Warming Conference” in Kyoto, Japan in 1997.  John’s leadership helped China create solar health clinics to founding the Maryland Clean Energy Center that promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy programs throughout the state.  He led the United States-China cooperation on “Greening Beijing” for the 2008 Olympics and the design of two zero energy buildings in the Olympic Village.  Currently, in addition to running the Sustainable Design Group, he has been developing solar bulk milk chillers for rural dairies that do not have access to electricity as well as solar cold storage units for agriculture products such as meat, eggs, vegetables, butter, cheese, fruit, among others along with solar powered water purification plants.

Through his over 40 years of green building and design experience, John has developed many building and renewable energy products such as solar heating systems, advanced glazing systems for passive solar buildings, ultra efficient heating and air-conditioning systems (HVAC), radon control systems, passive solar greenhouses, and the Earth Home fully integrated building system.  He has helped plan and design major sustainable communities in the United States, Mexico, China, and South Africa.  He is one of the foremost experts in sustainable design and consultants with the Federal, State, and local governments advising on energy policy, sustainable infrastructure development, and how sustainable designs positively impacts economic development.

John has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to making the world a better place for all through promoting and developing sustainable development practices and technologies. His work in developing countries to help the poor through sustainable development has touched the lives of thousands, if not millions, by bringing them housing, clean water, sanitation, nutritious food, renewable energy, and economic opportunity. In the U.S., there is hardly an institution, technology, association, or policy related to sustainable development that Mr. Spears has not had some influence on during his 40 year career.
