Program Overview:

Founded in 2004 by a unique network of business and academic leaders in Research Triangle Park of North Carolina, the Institute has had a distinguished track record of training and supporting communities, Chambers of Commerce, and small businesses in their drive to adopt best practices in sustainable community development.

Re-launched in response to the massive hurricanes, wildfires, and other events of 2017, today the Institute for Sustainable Development focuses on promoting innovation, best practices, and partnerships for recovery, resilience, and transformational development.

Since its relaunch, ISD has provided insights, technical assistance, and capacity building for an agribusiness incubator in Puerto Rico, a rural development project in Guatemala, green building needs for the Florida Keys, sixty small businesses in southern California in partnership with Wells Fargo Bank, and shown a spotlight on a range of long-term recovery and resilience needs and opportunities. It helps big businesses, government agencies, and civil society organizations raise awareness, build trust, and forge partnerships.

The following is a short video capturing its work with Wells Fargo Bank and small businesses in the aftermath of the 2017 Thomas Fire of California:
