Dr. Malcolm ‘Mac’ Odell heard JFK’s call and joined the first United States Peace Corps group in 1962. He was assigned to the Kingdom of Nepal and worked, taught, and created grass roots development projects there from 1962 through 1967. He helped build and taught in the Sir Edmund Hillary’s Namche Bazaar School at foot of Mount Everest. Sir Hillary’s schools where significantly funded by Rotary International Clubs around the world. Then “Mac” lived and worked in Nepal for an additional thirteen years helping to start a new National Park along the Nepal-Tibetan borders.
Mac is now collaborating and cooperating with Rotary Clubs in the United States and around the world in realizing a new vision for completing the “Great Himalaya Trail”. This is a 500 mile trekking trail from one end of Nepal to the other through the Middle Hills Regions of Nepal. The goal is to expand upon sustainable, ‘Community led’ Ecotourism. This effort will reach 1,000 to 2,500 people from sixty – eighty remote, marginalized villages along the 500 mile trail.
He as worked for over 35 years in international community mobilization, women’s empowerment, and ecotourism for poverty alleviation. Besides his extensive living, working, traveling, and teaching in Nepal Mac has lived and work abroad for 19 years. Nine of these years in Asian and African villages. He is a world-renown community developer best know for creating the “Appreciative Planning and Action” (APA) method of rural adult education and development.
APA was used for peacebuilding in Nepal after the Maoist Rebellion largely ceased. APA is used with Habitat for Humanity among 250 local NGOs. It has engaged with some 400,000 under resourced men, women, and children in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Kenya, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, among other countries. Other outstanding efforts include working five years for the Government of Botswana. He has also worked with the World Bank, USAID, Norwegian Aid, CARE, Heifer Project, Salvation Army, among many other notable international organizations. Mac has a “BA” from Princeton University and “MS” and “PhD” degrees in applied Development Sociology from Cornell University.
